CHAPTER TEN

“But that’s not possible,” Maty cried into her phone as she slammed her car door. “Carter’s care is paid up for another month.”

“I’m showing an email that states his stay and medical assistance will be terminated at the end of next week, but I wasn’t given any indication on where he will be moved,” the director of the facility stated. “I’m sorry to call so late, but I was working on some reports and was surprised to see this change since Carter has only been here a short time. I was hoping you could let me know where he’s headed so we can contact the new facility and get the paperwork started.”

Maty gripped her phone in one hand and fished her keys from her bag with the other. She had no idea what was going on, but she knew exactly who was holding the purse strings.

“Can I call you back?” Maty asked as she shoved open her door…or tried to because the damn thing kept getting stuck. “There’s just been a misunderstanding and I’ll get this squared away.”

“Yes, of course. Thank you.”

Maty disconnected the call and shoved her shoulder against the door to get the damn thing to open. Once she was in, her mind was racing. She didn’t give a damn that it was late on a Friday night, she wanted some answers.

She dropped her purse on the table inside the door and immediately dialed Rusty. Of course the call went to voice mail. He could never be bothered to answer his cell, not even for her. He always called her back after he’d seen the missed call.

Maty shot off a text that she needed to speak with him and it was an emergency. Why in the hell had he messed with the payments? Why had he informed them that Carter wouldn’t need a room after next week? There was nowhere else for her brother to go and without insurance or money up front, nobody would take him.

Part of her wanted to cry for being put in this position, but the practical side of her knew that nothing would be solved if she cried. Time was not on her side and she had to find some answers, then she had to find a solution.

She stared at her phone, willing it to ring. Frustrated, infuriated and beyond exhausted, Maty grabbed her bag and headed back out the door. She didn’t even think about her next move, she simply got in her car and drove to Sam’s house.

She hadn’t seen him since he’d dropped her off at her apartment last night after her VIP tour of the distillery.

At this point, she wasn’t sure what to say to him, at least not about their intimacy. What could be said? They clearly didn’t have an issue with sex—granted that had never been a problem, but they weren’t young and in love anymore. She had a serious problem and there was no way to get help unless she laid out her cards.

Which was how she found herself pulling into Sam’s drive a few minutes later.
